WEST POINT, N.Y. – Holy Cross sophomore RF Nick Andersen went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run and two runs scored to lead the fourth-seeded Crusaders to a 5-3 win over No. 1 Army West Point in Game 1 of the Patriot League Baseball Championship semifinals.
Andersen hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to give Holy Cross its first lead at 3-1 before scoring what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI single from junior 1B Ryan Grundy. The Crusaders’ junior RHP Thomas Skrobe earned the win, tossing 2.1 innings of perfect relief and striking out two.
Patriot League Rookie of the Year Josiah Overbeek led Army West Point, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored.
The top-seeded Black Knights will try to stave off elimination when they host No. 4 Holy Cross for Game 2 of the semifinal round at Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. on ESPN+.
Sunday also features Game 1 of No. 3 Navy at No. 2 Bucknell. Live coverage on ESPN+ begins at 1 p.m. from Depew Field at Marren Park in Lewisburg, Pa.
The semifinal-round winners advance to the best-of-three Patriot League Baseball Championship Series at the home site of the highest-remaining seed. The Patriot League Championship Series winner will receive the League’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Baseball Regionals. WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sophomore RF Nick Andersen went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run and two runs scored to lead No. 4 Holy Cross to a 5-3 victory over No. 1 Army West Point in Game 1 of the Patriot League Championship semifinals.
*Andersen finished a triple short of the cycle, doubling in the second inning, hitting a single in the fourth and then launching a two-run home run over the right-field wall in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie.
*He scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning after drawing a one-out walk, crossing the plate on an RBI single by junior 1B Ryan Grundy.
*Crusaders’ junior RHP Thomas Skrobe entered the game with one out in the seventh and retired the next eight batters to earn his third win of the season. He struck out two batters in 2.1 innings of perfect relief.
*Junior DH Gianni Royer drove in one run and scored twice in four at-bats, while junior C Colin Brown drove in Royer for Holy Cross’ first run of the game on a sacrifice bunt.
*Patriot League Rookie of the Year Josiah Overbeek led the Black Knights, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run, one double and two runs scored.
*Black Knights’ senior LF William Parker went 2-for-4 with a run scored, and freshman 3B Mason Scott went 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly that scored Parker in the sixth inning.
*Senior RHP Andrew Berg took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits over 7.1 innings. He struck out four and walked three.
*The game, originally scheduled for 2:05 p.m., was moved back two hours on Friday due to weather, then delayed nearly two hours due to rain in West Point, N.Y.
